Acknowledging that Big Data is the new definitive source of competitive advantage across all industries, and Big Data market is all set to hit the $50 billion mark worldwide by 2017, ATI, your local IT partner  for custom application development, and Greythorn, Specialist  Technology Recruitment,  organized an event on Wednesday, May 15, 2003.

Big Data Event

The day commenced with a presentation from Anthony Skinner, CTO,  SEOmoz. “Big data is not about size anymore. It is more about how companies go about managing, analyzing and mining the data,” said Anthony in its presentation.

The next speaker of the day was Phil Smith, Lead Development Engineer, SEOmoz, who emphasized the importance of HBase for Application Developers and Technical Architects.  He said,  “Today, Big data technologies like Hadoop  and HBase are increasingly being used at Web and online gaming companies,  financial services firms and banks, but it is useful for the traditional enterprise as well, both large and small.”

Hadoop is a framework that allows for the distributed processing of large data sets across clusters of computers using simple programming models. It is designed to scale up from single servers to thousands of machines, each offering local computation and storage.

HBase is an open source, distributed, and a scalable big data store for Hadoop. Inspired by Google’s Bigtable technology, HBase serves as the underlying infrastructure for much of the consumer web.

David Segleau, Director of Product Management with Oracle rounded out the day with a discussion about Oracle NoSQL Database. Oracle NoSQL Database has a powerful and flexible transaction model that greatly simplifies the process of developing a NoSQL-based application. It scales horizontally with high availability and transparent load balancing even when dynamically adding new capacity.

Businesses, in general, need to understand and embrace the Big Data, which is on the verge of a rapid growth spurt, and Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, HBase, and Oracle NoSQL offer immense possibilities for innovation and improved agility, resulting in increased profitability.

Thank you to all of our speakers and attendees for your participation at the event,  making it a Big Success!!
